North of Hamtramck is the Detroit neighborhood known as NoHam, or less formally, Banglatown--so named for its high population of Bangladeshi immigrants and businesses. This small community is the last outpost of civilization before the abandoned neighborhoods of the old North Side. Less prosperous than Hamtramck, it is just as colorful or perhaps more so: restaurants and sewing shops all sport bright signs in multiple languages. The architecture is as humble as most of Detroit's wider neighborhoods, a mix of low concrete-based shops and warehouses with modest bungalow homes and just a few not-to-tall apartment buildings. In the evenings, Banglatown is quieter than its neighbor to the south, the sidewalks rolling up around nine on weekdays except for a corner store or two.
