Mexicantown

Arguably the heart of Southwest Detroit, the Vernor-Junction neighborhood is bounded by Michigan Avenue, Clark Street, I-75 and Waterman. Vernor-Junction can be characterized as working-class with a mix of seniors and families. The district is known for its Mexican cuisine at restaurants such as Mexican Village, Evie's Tamales, El Zocalo and Xochimilco. The main thoroughfares are Bagley Street and Vernor Street, with restaurants, bakeries, and shops located on Vernor Highway. Vibrantly colored buildings, decorated with even brighter murals and hand-painted signs, enliven the streets.
