Delray
South of Mexicantown, Delray stretches down to Zug Island, and occupies a wedge of land between Interstate 75 and the river. Most of the area matches other places where the city is losing its battle for survival. There are small stretches of buildings that might once have held shops or offices, but the lower floors and street-side windows are covered in plywood... not only that, but the plywood itself is faded and beginning to rot, suggesting that Delray's prosperous days ended long, long ago.
Fort Wayne, located at the foot of Livernois Avenue, is one of the few attractions here, and the only large park area. The fort is situated on the Detroit River, between the Ambassador Bridge and Zug Island. The original 1848 limestone barracks still stands, as does the 1845 star fortification.
