Greektown

Greektown is a historic commercial and entertainment district located just northeast of the heart of downtown, along Monroe Avenue between Brush and St. Antoine Streets with a station on the city's elevated downtown elevated transit system known as the Detroit People Mover. The district is dominated by Greek-themed restaurants and includes St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, Second Baptist Church, the Atheneum Suite Hotel, and the Greektown Casino Hotel within its boundaries.

The neighborhood is a popular restaurant and entertainment district, having many restaurants that serve authentic Greek cuisine, as well as one of the city's three casinos, Greektown Casino. Certain buildings on Monroe Street are themed to resemble the Parthenon, Pegasus, and other forms of Greek architecture. Greek music is also played on Monroe Street throughout the day. Well known restaurants include The New Parthenon, The Golden Fleece, Laikon Cafe, Cyprus Taverna, Pegasus Taverna, Pizza Papalis, and Fishbone's Rhythm Kitchen Cafe.

  • Greektown Casino: Located at 555 E. Lafayette Boulevard, the Greektown Casino occupies a central location in the historic neighborhood of Greektown. The five-story, exposed brick structure began as a warehouse for fur traders, then became an enclosed shopping mall known as Trappers Alley. As a casino, it is decorated with neon lights, blazing torches and a Greek motif. A bright, modern, blue glass atrium covers one corner of the old brick building, blazoned with the name of the establishment.
  • New Parthenon Restaurant: Located at 547 Monroe Street, across the street from the Greektown Casino, the New Parthenon restaurant inhabits a two story brick storefront. The modest exterior boasts blue awnings over each window, including the three on the second story. The main awning bears the restaurant's name which is also emblazoned upon the brick wall in neon lights. The wooden door is topped by a by a marble frieze depicting horse drawn chariots and Greek gods.
  • Atheneum Suite Hotel: Located at 1000 Brush Avenue, the Atheneum Suite Hotel is a luxury all-suite boutique hotel centered in the heart of the Greektown Historic District. The 10 story hotel is is only a short walk, or hotel shuttle ride, from Comerica, Ford Field and Joe Louis Arena, and Detroit's growing Theater District. In addition, the hotel can accommodate conferences for up to 1,000 people with its 26,000 square feet of meeting space. The Atheneum's architecture is a Greek themed Modern style and its red and white striped facade and glass fronted lobby is bold in character.
