North End

The North End, once a quaint neighborhood of lower-income families living cheek by jowl in early 20th-century houses, is now a textbook example of Detroit's decay. Most of these homes date back to the 20s and 30s, when the growth of the automotive industry brought an economic boom and the expansion of Detroit's housing. For over 50 years, however, the area has been in decline. A section of Arden Park Boulevard, running crosstown, still clings to some semblance of life; everywhere else, boarded-up windows, empty lots, and leaning, derelict houses predominate.
