Founded in 1868, Wayne State University consists of 13 schools and colleges which encompass 203 acres, linking more than 100 education and research buildings in the heart of Detroit. The center of campus at University is a spacious area. The grounds are carefully maintained, and paved in decorative walkways, while green trees and bushes are planted throughout the space, adding color between the ground and the sky.

To the south the curvy, modern facade of the area is dispelled by the towering form of Old Main: a massive, castle-like structure that houses the original Wayne State University complex. To the north is the School of Medicine, a glass marvel, a mixture of southwestern architecture combined with the latest in modern technologies, creating a distinctive angular shape. Beyond that the College of Nursing and the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences can be seen.

In all directions are the various colleges of the University and their arrays of buildings housing Business Administration, Education, Engineering and Law schools. Standing out from these is the Irvin D. Reid Honors College, the cavernous buildings able to hold room for whatever major even the university may host.

Tucked away though, with the intent of being out of sight of donors and visitors, is the area dedicated to student housing. Those buildings, not as well maintained by their occupants, nonetheless serve a vital purpose to the running of the University.
